Informationen zur Universität

As a cooperative project of three outstanding scientific institutes and institutions - the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), the Hertie School of Governance (HSoG), and the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) - the BTS constitutes a distinctive platform for ambitious, innovative, and cutting-edge research in transnational and international relations. It situates itself at the intersections of international affairs and comparative area studies, of political science, economics, history, law, and sociology, assuming that this is where the most exciting changes and debates in an era of globalisation and fragmentation take place.

Through its cooperative structure, the BTS offers young researchers the possibility to work with three institutions and to benefit from the collaboration with an exceptional group of senior and junior scholars, from acquired professional skills and from sophisticated facilities. Thus, the BTS creates a unique place where young researchers find an adequate setting for their investigations, intellectual exchanges, and cooperation with other programme participants, as well as with staff and scholars at the three institutions involved.

Student Life

Studying at BTS provides you with the opportunity to live in one of Europe's most exciting cities. Berlin is known for its vibrant academic and cultural opportunities and as a cosmopolitan city with over 3 million people from almost 200 different countries. Urban life is characterized by multiculural diversity. Therefore, the three BTS locations can stand for the wide variety of Berlin, a city with an extraordinary range of opportunities and attractions, many of them tailored to suit the tastes of the students and academics who study and work at the numerous universities. The city offers great opportunities for researchers, career-minded people, artists and musicians alike. Conferences, workshops and lectures welcoming big names in academia offer plenty of opportunities for academic activities.
Germany is top for foreign students

Germany comes 1st in a new ranking of university systems composed by a major British Council conference in Hong Kong called 'Going Global'. The ranking includes a wide range of measures, such as openness, degree quality and support for overseas students. In particular, German universities put emphasis on equality and access opportunities. The study also outlines that Germany has strongly expanded its position as a receiver of international students in recent years. more

Berlin City Life

Berlin is recognized for its historical architecture, sporting events and museums. Footprints of world history can be visited like the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Schloss Charlottenburg, Check Point Charly and Glienecker Bridge, the spot for exchanging spies during the Cold War.
Berlin is the place of a great range of museums, art galleries, operas and concert halls. The Museum Island, listed as an UNSECO World Heritages Site, hosts more than six outstanding museums - including the New Museum displaying Nophretete, Germany's most famous 'migrant'. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle is one of the best orchestras in the wold. The young, international and creative community is active in Berlin as well. For example, the Bread and Butter, a tradeshow for young fashion designer and fashion labels, attracts thousends of people each year to the terminal of Berlin Tempelhof, Berlin's earlier city airport which was used by American aircrafts during the Berlin Airlift in the late 1940s. And finally, you cannot miss the city's glittering nightlife. Berlin's club scene attracts visitors from all parts of the world as do the yearly festivals. For example, the "Karneval der Kulturen" festival celebrates multiculturalism as a colorfull street parade every pentecost weekend and the "Berliner Festspiele" unites a whole bunch of smaller festivals, like the "JazzFest Berlin".

Costs of Living

One of Berlin's major advantage is the exceptionally low costs for living, cultural events, housing and public transport. Compared to other major European cities, the costs of living range among the lowest in Europe. For example, official statistics provided by the German Federal Statistics Office report that the average expenditures on food are considerably lower compared to the UK, Switzerland and France.

Accommodations

Overall, the housing market in Berlin is relaxed, although rents vary greatly depending on the neighbourhood and your demands in terms of equipment. But sharing a flat with other people is common in Berlin. We call it Wohngemeinschaft or just WG. A wide range of webpages have been set up to connect appartment hunters. In addition, the Berliner Studentenwerk offers students accommodations in a variety of areas in Berlin, although students living there will most likely be from an undergrad level.
