The Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) in Madrid was created by Law 7/1996, on 8th July, at the behest of the Government of the Comunidad de Madrid. Its medium term goal is to enrich the students’ individual and social opportunities in the region of Madrid, with a clear emphasis on international and research matters.

This public university is located in the Southern area of the Comunidad de Madrid, with four campuses at Móstoles, Alcorcón, Fuenlabrada and Vicálvaro (Madrid), where the following subject areas are, mainly being developed:

Services & Facilities

The sports facilities of Rey Juan Carlos University in Campus Fuenlabrada has a complete athletics track with terraces whose skating is for 3000 locations approximately, a gym with fitness area and weights room, a natural grass football pitch, four paddle courts, three tennis courts, 4 sports centre tracks, a fronton, an artificial grass football pitch where you can practice 7-a-side football.

To mail letters there are yellow post boxes all over the city. Stamps can be bought at tobacconists and currently cost:

Spain: 0,31 Euro.

Europe: 0,60 Euro.

Rest of the world: 0,78 Euro.

Public telephones can be used with coins or phonecards, bought from tobacconists.

To connect with the international network you have to dial 00-country code-area code-phone number. The international code for Spain is 34.

The monetary unit is the Euro, with coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, 1 and 2 Euro. Banknotes include 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Euro.

Banking hours are generally, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Monday through Friday). Some banks also open on Thursday evenings from 5:00 pm until 7:30 pm.

Our Móstoles and Vicálvaro campuses include Caja Madrid offices, with ATMS.

Most shops open daily from 10:00 to 13:30 or 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:30. Big department stores open from 10:00 to 22:00, including Saturdays and, occasionally, on Sundays. Establishments such as VIPS do not close until 3:00 a.m.. There are some 24h shops.

Dispensing chemists / Pharmacies close on Saturday afternoons. In newspapers and at each pharmacy, there is a list of the the ones on duty 24h/day. Some pharmacies are open on a 24-7 basis.

School insurance protects its beneficiaries against some contingencies which might occur while in Spain, with the following benefits:

School accident

A school accident is considered any physical injury suffered by the beneficiary of the insurance policy during the activities directly or indirectly related to his/her condition as a student, including sports,assemblies, study or training trips, whenever these activities have been organised or authorised by educational centres.

As far as sport activities are concerned, an accident will be covered if it consists of injuries suffered during the participation in championships, internal leagues, as well as during training, when the student belongs to a University team.

Regarding students who carry out traineeships in national territory, they are considered under protection of Royal Decree 1497/1981, covered by the School insurance. Traineeships must have been organized or authorized (according to the Royal Decree) and it is necessary that the student be registered at the University with paid fees.

This protection is also available for students who are involved in traineeships in companies but who are not under the protection of the Royal Decree if, and only if, they are organized or authorized by the teaching institution.

Those benefits include:

* Medical and pharmaceutical assistance or, if it proceeds, hospitalization and surgery.


* Economic indemnities in the following cases:



- Total and permanent disability for the studies started.

- Complete disability. In this case, the student will have a life benefit of 144,24 Euro per year.

Rights for those benefits coming from the school accident expires just the year after it has occurred.

Student Life

Due, to its youth, the University has not built yet its residence halls, expected for year 2011.

Students may find accommodation in shared flats with prices ranging from 250 to 350 Euro. A two month deposit is usually requested. Generally the rent of a single room in a private flat with shared cooking facilities costs about 200 Euro, full board 490 Euro.

In Madrid it is not difficult to find accommodation. For many students the best option is to arrive for the Intensive and free Spanish course and stay during the first days in some hostal o hotel. Once here, seeing the City and all the Campus, they can decide better with other students their best accommodation.

Living costs in the Province of Madrid are higher than in other parts of Spain. However, Vicálvaro, Móstoles, Alcorcón and Fuenlabrada are much cheaper than some of the central areas in Madrid. For basic living expenses (i.e. rent, heating, lighting, food, daily fares), a single student would likely need around 700 Euro per month. The above does not include leisure expenses (except transportation), so the following may be helpful as a rough guide:

Public transport of Madrid:

* Metrobus ( Area A, underground and buses circulating in the city of Madrid )
- 1 way-ticket: 1 Euro
- 10 journeys: 7,40 Euro.


* “Cercanías” circulate in suburban Madrid, it is more expensive than the underground, but the price varies depending on the distance.


* Monthly pass between 46 and 70 euros (valid for metro, bus suburban. The price can vary depending on the area). If you are under 21 years, you can buy a student’s pass.

In the restaurant of the university, you can eat meals for 4,8 euros which includes two courses, dessert, bread and bottled water.
